Two school shootings have made headlines recently, and they have sparked on more talk and interest in the whole gun debate. Before I get started, I’d like to say to anyone who has lost a loved one in gun violence that I am so, so sorry. I cannot imagine how much pain that must bring, and what a horrible thing it was that happened. Please know that my prayers are for you and I do not wish that horrible type of event on anyone. With that said I must move on, though, sadly, I could sit here and write a eulogy for hours.

For as long as I can remember paying attention to what people were saying about this debate, I have heard two basic, consistent sides of the argument: guns are ok and can even be helpful, or guns are bad and should be banned. Before I get further and waste your time, I will tell you that I am of the former view, so if you don’t like hearing other’s opinions or are easily offended, this post may not be for you. Those who wish to keep reading, thank you. At the roots of these two sides is the question of whether or not guns are bad, and, to be honest, this is a rather silly question. Guns are inanimate objects that have no sovereign will over themselves. They cannot choose whether to do this or that, they cannot choose what or when to shoot, and they certainly cannot choose who’s hands they fall into. It’s the people behind the guns that do bad things. Let’s put it like this: if a person gets sick from eating too many cookies, who’s fault is it? Is it the cookie, or the person’s? Did the flour decide it wanted to get out of the pantry, mix itself with eggs and sugar, and bake itself? Did the sinister freshly baked cookies plot to wait until the person fell asleep so they could sneakily climb into their mouth and make them sick? No! It is the person, and solely the person, who decided to make the cookies and eat too many. No cookie walked into their mouth on their own. No other person shoved it down their throat. When applying this logic to guns, it is easy to see who is responsible.

People are inclined to evil. God brought us into this world as neutral, but we, as humans, chose evil over God’s good. Humans, as part of the fallen race, choose evil. Without God we are lost and broken and choose to do wrong, hurtful things all the time. Gun violence is no different. If a gun were to be on a shelf, it would sit there not moving until it rusted and fell apart. Think of Newton’s law of motion: an object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an outside force. Guns do not hurt people. People hurt people, and, tragically, a common tool they use is guns.

So why don’t we just ban all guns and then all of us can live free from violence and be happy? Sounds great, huh? But, banning guns will do absolutely nothing. How many guns are out there in this world? Thousands? Millions? A lot. No one can regulate them all, and even though the government may look strong and powerful, they cannot know every little detail of every person’s life. Ever. So does that mean they could miss guns? Oh yes!! Not to mention all the guns sold on the black market…the only problem banning guns would solve is, well, it wouldn’t solve any problem, it would create one. It would take guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens rendering them with little defense against someone who has illegally bought a gun on the black market and decided to use it for evil.

What can we do about it? “Walking out” of school will do little, if not nothing beyond selfishly drawing attention to yourself. It proves nothing and changes nothing. It’s only accomplishment is raising awareness to others about gun violence–but what does mere awareness do in the long run anyway? Without a cure, we can be “aware” of cancer all we want and still have no way to save a sick patient. The only thing that will change anything in our broken world is God’s love. As I said earlier, all people are inclined to evil. Our very hearts (where every one of our thoughts and actions originate according to Proverbs 4:23) are inclined to evil (see Genesis 2-3 where it talks about the fall). Therefore, there is nothing we can do on our own to change that or to change others, but there is hope. God changes hearts with his love and mercy. He softens people and shows them the hope and life he offers, even while we live in a world of believable lies. Hurt people hurt people, but God heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds (Psalm 147:3). So our first course of action is not to stand or walk away, but to do get down on our knees and pray. When we have supplicated to God, he will give us the Spirit’s power to change lives. Then, and only then, will our world change, and this violence and evil will decrease.

Bring your Bible

Hey everyone! I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted. School is in full swing and I’ve been super busy with all kinds of projects and, of course, the dreaded pre-calculus *shiver*. For those who don’t know I wanted to take a moment and let you know about Bring Your Bible to School day on October 5th! Even though I go to a school where it’s required to bring your Bible, I’m so excited for this day because of what it means for everyone else participating. I have read story after story and watched video after video about these amazing students who brought their Bibles and were able to share their faith with people. I used to go to public schools and would never dream of bringing my Bible (ok, maybe I would, but I’d never take it out of my backpack) or standing at the flagpole for See You at the Pole (which is coming up soon too!!). I was too worried about what others might think, and honestly wasn’t all that involved in my Bible or praying. People at my school liked to be mean to anyone they could get their grubby little hands on…which I know doesn’t change from one school to another, even at a Christian school. I want to encourage you to bring your Bible and read it at school on October 5th. Even if you’re the only one at your school participating, don’t feel ashamed or out of place. People will fail you every time, but God will never forsake you. Don’t let anyone tell you you’re not allowed to do this either-it’s your constitutional right. Oh, and be prepared to share you faith with those who might ask questions. Someone might just want to know a little more about what being a Christian really means. Thousands of people across the US in elementary through college will participate so you’re certainly not alone. One last thing, be praying for this. Prayer is powerful. Pray that this day would be successful and someone might be interested and ask some questions. Ask for strength and boldness to participate, and consider participating in See You at the Pole too. This is another great way to gather people and unite Christians at your school. This year See You at the Pole is on September 26, and is a day where everyone is invited to come a few minutes early to school and pray around the flagpole for your school.

Back to school

I know I'm probably in the minority when I say I'm excited to go back to school. Long summer, lazy days in the 120 degree heat, and none of my people around me doesn't usually sound very appealing. I just wanted to leave you with a few thoughts before the school year starts (or before you get too far into it).

As summer comes to a close, it can be hard to swing back into that school zone where you actually have to talk to people. It is especially hard when you're new. For those of you who are not new, remember what it felt like to once be new and use that empathy to help a new student. Nothing boosts confidence and takes away shyness like a friend on your first day. Try to be genuine and gracious, and introduce the new person to as many people as you can. If you're new, I know how difficult that can be. If someone comes up and introduces themselves, don't be afraid to talk to them. Shyness is hard to talk to, though sometimes also hard to quench. Friendships take time, so if you don't have five best friends on your first day, don't be disappointed. Pray and ask God to send you a genuine friend; God will bring you comfort. Never forget He's also he best friend you'll ever have.

This year will probably bring several changes: don't be scared of them!! Every year I catch myself hoping I have the same schedule as last year because changing something just sounds unfathomable in the moment. Of course, I am disappointed every year when my schedule comes out, but wind up happy in the end. Different isn't the end of the world; change is going to happen, and happen often it will! Friends will drift apart or move away, schedules will change, teachers will be different, but remember to keep your eye on the one thing that never will change. Jesus is constant and will never leave your side. No matter what happens he is always with you and will always love you…don't you ever forget that! Even through small changes (or things you want to change that don't), He has a plan for you-and it's a perfect one too! His plan is meant for your good no strings attached, though it may not seem like it at times. Hang in there!

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.””

Finally, keep your mind set on Him and He will not lead you astray. I have read that whatever statement or thought you keep on your mind constantly will become truth to you. If you constantly tell yourself stuff like I'm not pretty, she's better than me, he's not that bad, I'm not good enough, and I'm not nearly as bad as her, those things will become truth to you. If you fill your mind, heart, day, and life with God's truth, you will find a weight being lifted off your shoulders. God loves you, He is with you, He wants what is best for you, and He never gives up on you no matter what you do, what you did, or what's been done to you. Take a minute and read these words from the Bible. Be still and know that you are his daughter (or son). Let these words sink in and bring you healing and joy. His truth will set you free…and you will be free indeed!

“To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

In April my class took a trip to Santa Catatlina Island off the coast of California.  Now that’s it finally summer, I thought I’d post some beach pics. We had an amazing trip despite a couple of the downfalls. We stayed in this science camp on the island which was not all that clean and had a million huge bugs, but the views and time with my friends made every second worth it. 

Here are some pictures of us kayaking. The beaches on Catalina are rocky and small, so there was no sitting around and suntanning here! We got to do some pretty fun stuff, though, other than what most people do on sandy beaches. We went kayaking, watched the sunrise on the docks, and went snorkeling. Snorkeling was…uh…a very new experience: scary and fun at the same time😆




We took a hike up one of the hills on the edge of the island. You can see a little bit of the smaller hills in the background of the pics above. From the top of our hiking hill looking out with our backs facing the ocean there were these rolling green hills speckled with tiny yellow mustard blossoms which reminded us of The Sound of Music. Here are some pics from that hike…

That hill/cliff in the background is the hill we just hiked. The views were breathtaking. I’m standing infront of a little cove at sunset. It was quite chilly. 

Oh the beautiful mustard! It was everywhere, and I so wish I could have gotten better pictures!

After Catalina, we went to Knott’s Berry Farm!! For those who don’t know, Knott’s Berry is a theme park with some fantastic roller coasters. Oh and please don’t mind the hair: it’s not used to humidity. None of us looked good!!

My favorite pics from the vacation…there’s a sunrise on the island, me and my best friend watching the waves, a really cool tree at the camp, some Huntington Beach pics, and a tiny sandcrab we caught! Oh how beautifully blue the water is!!
